ORONO -- On Friday, Aug. 15, horse racing returns to the Orono arena.
The Preserve Kirby Church Committee, formed to raise money to move the Kirby Church across Hwy. 115 to Clarke Museum, will be bringing Orono's horse-racing tradition back, with an evening of fine food, prizes and stick-horse racing.
The event will include a carriage ride to the arena, a lobster and steak dinner on the floor of the arena, and 10 races, complete with pomp and pageantry and betting.
Tickets are $50 each and are available at Clarington's museums and some local businesses.
The group is seeking businesses to act as sponsors. A deluxe package provides dinner for six, two horses in the races, champagne to celebrate the winnings, a carriage ride and a dance to end the evening.
Races will entail participants receiving stick horses, which will move around the arena floor according to a roll of the dice.
Moving the church across the highway will protect the building from deterioration, due to proximity of traffic and aid in the development of a pioneer village in Kirby.
