OSHAWA -- General Motors is still hammering at details of its restructuring plan, says a company representative.
"General Motors of Canada is in discussions with the Canadian and Ontario governments concerning assistance to complete our restructuring plans in Canada," GM spokeswoman Patty Faith said in an e-mail. "While General Motors of Canada did not find it necessary to take the much-appreciated offers of emergency loans made by the governments on Dec. 20, we have continued discussions concerning government financing assistance to complete the restructuring required to ensure a viable, sustainable business going forward."
The company is also talking to the Canadian Auto Workers, Ms. Faith said.
"We are also in discussions with the CAW," she said. "These talks are proceeding well."
CAW Local 222 president Chris Buckley said talks between the union and GM have been short and very informal.
"There have been no formal discussions," Mr. Buckley said. "We've had small group meetings to try to figure out what direction we are going in."
Mr. Buckley said the union understands the severity of the situation and that it will have to make some sacrifices. But nothing can be done until the government lays out its expectations for the company and the union, he said.
"We are in a holding pattern," he said.
GM is set to present restructuring plans on Feb. 20, to help the Province and feds determine the amount of cash they will loan the company.
