Job fairs may ease hiring process

One-stop shopping

WHITBY -- Employment fairs are a great place to find eager candidates, say local businesses.

It’s one-stop shopping for finding, assessing and interviewing potential employees. At the most recent youth employment fair at Cullen Central Park in Whitby more than a dozen local employers gathered to find the right staff for their workplaces.

At a previous fair this summer in Ajax about 460 young job-seekers attended, Jennifer Scott of Service Canada said.

There are many benefits for employers because they can get resumes and even have the option of interviewing people on the spot, Ms. Scott said.

The fairs are open to youth aged 15 to 30 and fairs take place twice during the summer. Usually one event happens in Whitby and one in Ajax.

Local business people know the benefits of attending the day-long event.

“It’s another way to recruit everywhere,” said Amanda Lorefice, a representative from a local Danier Leather location.

“We’re in the midst of hiring at several locations,” said Marlene Connolly of Edukids Childcare Centre, so they decided to go to the fair where they could meet candidates right away, in person.

There are three key things she is looking for when candidates approach her booth: genuine interest in the job, good self-presentation and friendliness.

Youth employment fairs are also a great place to find volunteer work, said June Enright, executive director of The Canadian Organization for Tropical Education and Rainforest Conservation.

High school students should try to get their mandatory volunteer hours done early, Ms. Enright said.

And the benefits of volunteering are plentiful, she said.

“You get excellent references for your resume and good contacts,” she said.
