PICKERING -- Alana Della Mora is used to being called a princess.
Ms. Della Mora, 22, earned the title because she dresses up like Snow White for birthday parties.
"Most of the time the kids think you are the real thing," Ms. Della Mora said. "They ask if you are going back to your castle after the party."
Ms. Della Mora owns Fairytale Parties based in Pickering. She started working for the company last summer and when the previous owner was looking to sell the business in September 2007, Ms. Della Mora took over.
She now runs the business in addition to playing dress-up. She also goes to school full-time and teaches dance at summer camp.
But even though she owns the business now, leading the parties is still her favourite part.
"The expressions on the kids' faces are great," she said.
She chose to buy the business from her former boss because she saw the potential in it.
"I thought it would be a great opportunity because the business is growing and we are continually increasing the amount of parties we do," she said.
The business has been growing since she took over almost a year ago, Ms. Della Mora said. Last year the company had about 60 parties throughout the year, a number they will easily surpass this year.
The company is also branching out and doing more appearances at corporate parties and community events, she said.
Ms. Della Mora has four other women on staff who will dress up as Cinderella, Belle, Tinkerbell, Snow White and Mulan. Dora, Deigo, Elmo and pirates can also come out to play at parties.
The parties generally last two hours depending on the package purchased, Ms. Della Mora said. The characters entertain children with crafts, games, music, face painting and costumes, which gives parents some time to prepare food or relax with relatives and friends.
The kids are usually between the ages of one to seven, said Ms. Della Mora.
