Scott Howard
The life of a Lakeview Manor resident came to a grisly end after he was struck by a train in Beaverton.
William Scott Livingstone, 87, was struck by a train near the Beaverton-Thorah Community Centre Thursday, Aug. 14, around 10:30 a.m. There are two gated crossings around the facility, on Simcoe and Main streets.
Few other details have been released by police, but his death has been ruled an accident.
In an interview Tuesday, Mr. Livingstone's wife of 58 years, Miriam, struggled to fight back tears as she recalled the visit from police informing her of his death.
"It was a terrible shock. It's going to take me a long time to get over this," she said.
"They told me that he was walking too close to the tracks and got hit by the train. He didn't see it or hear it. He never knew what happened."
She described her late husband as determined and very independent.
On the day of the accident, Mrs. Livingstone said, her husband was waiting on a ride to Lindsay to take a driver's license test.
"When they took his driver's license away, he was very upset. He was bound and determined to get it back," she said.
The couple had three children -- Martha, Kathy, and John -- and three grandchildren.
But there was another "family" that has provided support and solace for Mrs. Livingstone in the days since her husband's death -- the residents of Lakeview Manor.
"They've been wonderful. Everyone is so kind. We're a family here," she said.
Recalling some of the fond memories of their life together, Mrs. Livingstone described how happy they were when celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in Cannington.
"We had a very happy marriage," she said.
"I asked him if we'd make it to see our 60th (anniversary). That was just two years away."
Mr. Livingstone's funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. at Lakeview Manor.
