Having grown up on a Sunderland area farm, Danielle Lewis has been around horses for most of her life. And that familiarity paid off earlier this month as the teen captured a prestigious title.
The 14-year-old was named the overall junior showman at the 2008 National Clydesdale Show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from July 31 to Aug. 3. Danielle has participated in the event, which is one of the premier competitions for the breed in North America, since she began showing eight years ago.
She earned the overall showman title by her fine performance in five classes. She finished first in decoration, second in showmanship, judging and team, and fourth in cart.
"I was really happy when I found out that I had won," said Danielle, who starts classes at Brock High School next week.
Her younger sister, 11-year-old Jessica, finished third in the judging class.
According to their mom, Shelley, the family participates in only six shows per year, but make the trek to Wisconsin each summer because of the high level of competition.
"The Royal Winter Fair and the National Clydesdale Show are the two big events for Clydesdales," said Ms Lewis.
