Ambush in Afghanistan kills Canadian soldier

AFGHANISTAN -- A Canadian soldier who was part of a unit that builds rapport with residents of local villages has been killed in a Taliban ambush in the Zhari district of Kandahar province in Afghanistan.

The family of the solider has been notified, however, the soldier's name has not been released.  

A second soldier was also injured in the attack Tuesday in the Pashmul area outside of Kandahar City.
 
The Canadian foot patrol was ambushed with small arms fire shortly before noon Afghanistan time. 

Eighty-three Canadian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002.
