Summer activities galore at Ajax library

July 02, 2008 - 08:35

AJAX -- The Ajax Public Library wants youths to get laughing this summer.

The TD Summer Reading Club: Laugh Out Load is open to all youths in Ajax ages six to 12 years.

Youngsters can drop by any of the three library branches to pick up a reading club kit. Each kit has a poster, a bilingual reading activity book and a set of nine stickers.

After reading nine books, youths can return their reading log to the library and receive a Panago Pizza reading award.

The reading club is just one of many activities being put on by the library over the summer.

There's weekly reading club activities, Funny Friends Reading Buddies, a short story contest, and Panago Pizza Movie Matinees.

Reading club activities begin the first week of July. On July 3, a session from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the McLean Community Centre branch features a visit from Mad Science. The Jester Rattle craft program is being held on July 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Village branch.

At the main branch on July 8 at 10:30 a.m., comic juggler Craig Douglas performs.

Funny Friends Reading Buddies meets Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. at the McLean branch and on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. at the main branch. Youths can join high school volunteers in sharing stories, play games, create crafts and earn reading rewards. The programs runs to Aug. 21.

The reading club and reading buddies programs are free, drop-in activities, with space limited to room capacity.

Parental supervision is required for children under 10. The library isn't responsible for the welfare of any child left unattended in a library building.

The main library branch is at the corner of Harwood Avenue and Achilles Road and the phone number is 905-683-4000, ext. 811.

The McLean branch is in the community centre at the corner of Westney Road and Magill Drive. The number is 905-428-8489.

The Village branch is on Church Street north of Hwy. 2 and the number is 905-683-1140.
