Have your say on the regional chairman's position

Font small font medium font large font

MPP Jerry Ouellette's bill to have the Durham Region chairman directly elected is dead now that the Legislature has broken for the summer. How should this issue be handled now?
(Re: Ian McMillan's column) I find the lament regarding the sudden death of Mr. O'Toole and Mr. Ouellette's  private members bills to be  interesting . Many private members bills have died in the same manner under previous governments. Certainly Mr. O'Toole and Mr. Ouellette should be able to comment on this. I can recall many good and sound private members bills that died on the order paper. Our two local MPP's never voiced any concerns about those bills at those times when part of the government of the day, did they? Perhaps your assertions about the waste of money is valid, but lets spread the responsibility to all MPP's who have behaved similiarly in past. And not castigate our current government alone.

Ouellette's bill was just political posturing and will surely be political fodder for his campaign this fall. Ouellette could have raised the issue when he was a member of the government rather than opposition and could have had a chance of getting it passed. Instead, he only chose to introduce his bill when the municipal elections made it a popular issue. The MPP lacks credibility on his stance.
