DURHAM -- Even milk and ice cream aren't immune to economic conditions.

Reid's Dairy, which produces juice, take-home sundaes and milkshakes, as well as milk and other dairy products, has lost many of its Durham retail locations, some of which had recently had their names changed to Quickert's Dairy. Most of those locations are closed.

Stephen Quickert is the owner of Reid's Dairy. He deals with the production side of the business and owns the name Reid's Dairy. He said his products are still available in the region. A list of sellers of Reid Dairy products will be available on www.reidsdairy.com soon, he said.

Stephen Quickert's brother David owns the retail side of the business. Calls to David Quickert were not immediately returned. The answering machine at David Quickert's office says it is with deepest regrets that the company has had to close all locations because of economic conditions.

One location that is still open is the Quickert's Dairy on Brock Street in Whitby. Stephen Quickert said the location is owned by a franchisee and that's why it is still operating.

The other locations were closed as of Oct. 20, Stephen Quickert said.
