OSHAWA -- Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 president Chris Buckley will be Oshawa's federal NDP candidate.
On Sept. 24, he was chosen to represent the party at a nomination meeting at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43. A federal election has not yet been called. Mr. Buckley announced his intentions to run as the NDP candidate on Sept. 11.
"Oshawa deserves better than the invisible MP we've had for the past few years," said Mr. Buckley, in a news release. "We need a strong voice in Ottawa who will work hard to combat the erosion of good-paying jobs, not just in Oshawa, but the entire country. Our current MP is silent on too many issues that face the citizens of Oshawa; it's time Oshawa got its voice back."
Mr. Buckley has been the president of Local 222 since 2004. His term will expire in 2010.
If there is a federal election, Mr. Buckley would take a leave of absence from his position as local union leader and another member of the executive committee would be appointed to take the helm, he said after announcing his intentions to seek the position of NDP candidate.
Oshawa city councillor Nester Pidwerbecki and CUPE Ontario president Sid Ryan nominated Mr. Buckley as the candidate, according to the release.
