DURHAM -- Durham Regional Police have announced the seizure of $40 million worth of cocaine in a joint investigation with Canadian Border Service Agency and the RCMP.
The drugs were discovered in boxes of bottles of hot sauce that were were smuggled into Canada from Guyana.
"The cocaine has been tested by Health Canada and found to be near 80 per cent pure," Inspector Tom Cameron told reporters in a news conference that began about 10:30 a.m.
Of 1,250 boxes of hot sauce in one shipping container, 551 had cocaine hidden in them, he said.
Chief Mike Ewles is praising the work of Durham Region officers, the RCMP, and border security officials.
"This arrest will have an impact on the availability of the drug in the GTA and hopefully sends a strong message to other dealers and the networks that we will never stop our efforts to remove this from the Durham streets," Chief Ewles said.
An Etobicoke resident has been charged with importing cocoaine and other drug related charges. Newsdurhamregion.com will have full coverage.
