Ajax celebrates Black History Month

Feb 04, 2010 - 11:39 AM

AJAX -- February is Black History Month and Ajacians can choose from a number of activities to celebrate.

In partnership with the Women's Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham, the Town is hosting a display of African artifacts and information.

The display will be at the Ajax Community Centre, 75 Centennial Rd. on Feb. 10 from 3:30 to 7 p.m., at Town Hall, 65 Harwood Ave. S., on Feb. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the McLean Community Centre, 95 Magill Dr., on Feb. 24 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Cultural Expressions Art Gallery will be partnering with the Town for the Feb. 20 event at Town Hall. The goal is to celebrate the history and achievements of people of African descent through the arts, food, music and education. Activities include an art exhibition, live music and poetry readings and interactive games.

It will also serve as a fundraiser for Haiti relief, with donations collected and 10 per cent of the proceeds of items sold at the event going towards Haiti. For more information about the event, call 905-427-2412.

Ajax Library Services is also planning activities.

On Feb. 20, Ajax Reading Circle members and other kids aged four to 12 are invited for an hour of stories and activities celebrating the trickster spider, Anansi, on 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Main Branch Rotary Room, 55 Harwood Ave. S.

The Main Branch is also screening the film The Hurricane based on the life of Ruben "Hurricane" Carter, the boxer wrongfully convicted of murder in the 1960s. It starts at 1 p.m. on Feb. 27. Participants must be 14 years old to attend, and while the event is free, space is limited.

For either event, call 905-683-4000 ext. 8813 or e-mail libraryinfo@townofajax.com to register.

There will be a Black History Month display at all branches highlighting various library resources during February.

More information is available online at townofajax.com/library.
