DURHAM -- Getting back to work requires a plan.

Now local women who are hoping to get back into the workforce can get some help starting that plan. A conference taking place at the Ajax Convention Centre on Feb. 17 will have participants go through the steps of creating a back-to-work blueprint.

"It's mystifying and overwhelming for a lot of people," said event organizer Heather McMillan.

The action plan is not only essential for unemployed people seeking to get into some government programs, it is also an important part of the self-reflection process for those looking to get into the job market, she said.

The conference's keynote speaker is Debbie Patrick, owner and chief financial officer of the Bowmanville Foundry.

Also speaking will be Bonnie Porter, a career and education counsellor and the founder and director of What's Next?, a company that helps youth determine a path for their education and career.

There will be six workshops throughout the day. Participants can register for three of the seminars with topics including: steps of a return to work action plan, getting ready for college, labour market trends and making your skills work for you.

The event is being run as part of a partnership between the Durham Region Local Training Board, the Region of Durham Economic Development and Tourism Department, Ontario Works, Northern Lights, Durham College and Durham Continuing Education.

For those wishing to join who don't have transportation to get to the event there will be buses leaving from the Midtown Mall at 200 John Street in Oshawa. The buses will depart at 8 a.m. and will leave Ajax at 3:45 p.m. There will also be a bus to and from the Scugog Community Centre at 1655 Reach Street in Port Perry.

The cost to register for the conference is $10 per person, which covers lunch, workshops and conference materials. The buses are free for participants.

A registration form can be downloaded at www.drltb.com and mailed or dropped off to 450 Hopkins St., Suite 100 in Whitby. Participants can also register by calling 905-666-3620.
