AJAX -- Police have arrested a man who had been previously ordered by the courts not to possess false identification for trying to rent a car in Ajax with a phony driver's licence.
Durham fraud cops got a tip a suspect was attempting to send rented luxury cars overseas, and were waiting at an Ajax business Friday when the man showed up, trying to rent a Chrysler 300 valued at $40,000.
When an officer identified himself the suspect rushed him and struggled before breaking free, police said. The man was busted after a short foot pursuit and a scuffle with a number of officers. Cops recovered a driver's licence bearing an alias.
A second man who drove the suspect to the car rental outlet was arrested without incident and found to be in possession of false ID.
Robert Akwasi Boakye, 26, of no fixed address, faces fraud and conspiracy charges and assault to resist arrest. An alleged accomplice, 28-year-old Eric Kwaku Asomaning, of Toronto, is charged with fraud and obstructing police.
