College classes set to go on Tuesday

DURHAM -- Even if Durham College's support staff hit the picket lines on Tuesday, classes are set to start.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) represents 6,500 employees in Ontario's 24 colleges. Of those, 395 work at Durham College in the library, at students services and in many other areas. Their contract expires Aug. 31 and if no agreement is reached with the colleges this weekend, they could be on strike when students head back to class.

"We are open on Tuesday as usual; classes will be on, services will be available whether or not there is a strike," said Ken Robb, Durham College vice-president of human resources.

Mr. Robb said the school has informed students via e-mail that classes will go on and to expect delays in case of a strike.

But he's hoping it doesn't come to that.

"The parties are currently in bargaining and we are hopeful that a settlement will be reached shortly, at the latest over the weekend," said Mr. Robb.
