Dunnies want to team up with Durham

Sep 17, 2007 - 02:03 PM

DURHAM -- The Whitby Dunlops want to be Durham's heritage senior 'AAA' hockey team.

Steve Cardwell and Fred Ford of the Whitby Dunlops appeared before the Region's finance and administration committee on Sept. 12 to ask the committee to help the hockey team become a bigger part of the Region.

"What we are asking for is to be a bigger part of Durham Region than we currently are," Mr. Ford said.

The team would like to partner with the Region and be included in Durham's advertising promotion.

The men asked the Region to purchase season tickets, a Dunlops' jersey to hang in Regional headquarters and an advertisement in the game-night programs.

"The Dunnies are a sports tourism attraction," Mr. Ford said. "But we can't do it all with gate receipts."

The total amount the men are looking for from the Region is $5,649.

The Region's finance and administration committee referred the request to the economic development committee to see if there is money in the budget and if the request fits into their policies.
