Generals humbled by Memorial Cup hosts

Kitchener Rangers post 8-3 victory at GM Centre

Nov 01, 2007 - 10:18 AM

OSHAWA -- Oshawa celebrated an anniversary last night, but not a victory.

The Kitchener Rangers did everything they could to ensure that celebrations for the first anniversary of General Motors Centre were kept to a minimum after waltzing in and leaving with a convincing 8-3 victory over the Oshawa Generals.

It was the second major victory of consequence for Kitchener over Oshawa, who also secured the Memorial Cup for 2008, outlasting a strong bid by the Oshawa group.

The Rangers were strong on this night, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second period after the teams played the opening 20 minutes without a goal.

T.J. Battani, Justin Azevedo, Mike Mascioli and Nick Spaling did the damage, all four goals coming within a 4:40 span.

Brett MacLean scored the first of his two on  the night to get the Generals on the scoreboard, but Scott Timmins answered that goal to restore the four goal bulge for the Rangers.

Eric Regan’s point shot on the power play with 32 seconds left in the second period, coupled with McLean’s second of the night just 2:06 into the third period gave the Generals a glimmer of hope, battling to within two at 5-3.

But the Rangers blew it open on three straight goals by Yannick Weber, two of them on the power play, to close out the game 8-3.

Jakub Kovar was in net for all eight goals, although the young netminder was under a barrage of pressure all night. The Rangers peppered him with 47 shots on the night, while the Generals managed to generate just 26 in the direction of Josh Unice.

Kovar was the only reason the game stayed as close as it did early on, stopping everything directed his way in the first period as the Rangers outshot the Generals 19-6 through the opening 20 minutes.

Tonight the Generals travel to Brampton to face the Batallion before making a trip to Kingston on Sunday.
