Quebec trucker charged in Newcastle hit and run fatality

Bowmanville man, 22, struck on Hwy. 401

Police made an arrest in Grafton Sunday night in the hit and run death of a 22-year-old Bowmanville man.

Ontario Provincial Police made the arrest Sunding evening after a  man walking beside Hwy. 401 was fatally struck yesterday morning near Newcastle.

Police were sent to the 401 near Mill St. at about 5:45 a.m. Sunday after someone reported a deer had been run over, Const. Dave Woodford said.

When officers arrived, they found the body of a Robert Piontek, 22, of Bowmanville, who had been walking on the side of the highway.

Investigators found tire marks and parts from a Volvo tractor-trailer at the scene, and evidence that the truck was leaking anti-freeze as a result of the collision.

A tractor-trailer was later discovered near Grafton, on the 401 east of Cobourg.

The 48-year-old driver from Quebec was charged with failing to remain at the accident scene, said Woodford.
