Bowmanville man, 22, struck on Hwy. 401

Police made an arrest in Grafton Sunday night in the hit and run death of a 22-year-old Bowmanville man.
Ontario Provincial Police made the arrest Sunding evening after a man walking beside Hwy. 401 was
fatally struck yesterday morning near Newcastle.
Police were sent
to the 401 near Mill St. at about 5:45 a.m. Sunday after someone reported a
deer had been run over, Const. Dave Woodford said.
When officers
arrived, they found the body of a Robert Piontek, 22, of Bowmanville,
who had been walking on the side of the highway.
Investigators
found tire marks and parts from a Volvo tractor-trailer at the scene,
and evidence that the truck was leaking anti-freeze as a result of the
collision.
A tractor-trailer was later discovered near Grafton, on the 401 east of Cobourg.
The 48-year-old driver from Quebec was charged with failing to remain at the accident scene, said Woodford.
