De-stressing the workplace

Sep 05, 2008 - 03:03 PM

DURHAM -- Durham Region is looking to lead the way to stress-free workplaces through a free workshop in October.

Part of Healthy Workplace Month, the Region is presenting 'Work, Stress and Wellness: Leading the Way' on Oct. 21. The free event runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility in Ajax. It is aimed at managers, employers, human resource professionals and others who could bring best practices to their workplace.

According to one survey, 83 per cent of Canadians showed up for work while sick or exhausted an average of six times in the past year. And the Conference Board of Canada says stressed out workers are twice as likely to call in sick as those who report little stress.

"Improved employee health requires change at the individual and organizational level," said Jennifer Presley, a Durham public health nurse. Registration is required by Oct. 3. For more information or to register, call Durham Health Connection Line at 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841-2729.
