Plant closure will cost 123 jobs

Sep 03, 2008 - 08:00 PM

WHITBY -- Whitby is losing 123 jobs with the announcement late today that Smurfit-MBI, a corrugated container plant, will close.

A total of 123 employees, 106 hourly and 17 salaried employees, will be affected by this closure. The plant, located at 220 Water St.,  is tentatively scheduled to close at the end of October 2008.

According to a press release, existing business will be transitioned to nearby Smurfit-MBI facilities.

Initial reports indicate this decision is part of an overall strategic plan focused on improving overall performance and customer satisfaction. Reorganizing container operations to create specialized manufacturing capabilities, better utilize assets and enhance efficiencies is a key step in positioning the company for future growth and success.

Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation is one of the leading integrated - and corrugated packaging producers of the industry and is one of the world's largest paper recyclers.
