Durham cop charged with stunt driving while in unmarked cruiser

August 14, 2009

CAVAN -- A Durham Regional Police cruiser has been impounded after a 10-year veteran of the police force was charged with stunt driving Wednesday.

Ontario Provincial Police were conducting aerial traffic enforcement in Peterborough County around 5:30 p.m. on Hwy. 115 in the Cavan area when a car was seen travelling at a high rate of speed.

The car was subsequently stopped by a Peterborough County OPP officer, who found the car was an unmarked police vehicle registered to the Durham Regional Police Service.

The OPP have impounded the vehicle for seven days and a 34-year-old man, a 10-year veteran of Durham police, has had his licence suspended for the same period of time. He's been charged with racing a motor vehicle and is to appear in Peterborough court Sept. 14.

Provincial police have not released the officer's name, and a spokesman for Durham police could not be immediately reached for comment.
