We need to make sure we recycle wherever we can

The environment seems to be quite the topic these days in our community. Whether it is the incinerator, polluted lakes or the proposed corn ethanol plant: are all becoming pinnacle moments in our lifetime. All these decisions need to be made carefully, as the impact could be positive or negative.

That is why I am baffled that we as a community can overlook the simplest forms of environmental stewardship. During the wonderful celebrations of Bowmanville's 150th birthday, our family enjoyed the festivities at Ribfest at the Garner B. Rickard Complex. A great venue, with great food and great entertainment. Unfortunately, after my meal was done, I could not find one recycling bin for my recyclable waste. For such a large venue, recycling was shamefully overlooked.

I am quite disappointed in the Lion's Club of Bowmanville for overlooking such an important environmental issue: to reduce, reuse and recycle where we can. We all need to do our part and we have the means to do so. Why is it taking so long? Recycling by this point should be second nature; it is in our homes, schools, offices and businesses.

I feel any community event should be responsible to handle all waste appropriately by offering garbage and recyclable receptacles.
