Sunderland barn fire deemed suspicious

Nov 18, 2009 - 09:21 AM

SUNDERLAND -- A fire that destroyed a Sunderland-area barn early Sunday may have been deliberately set.

Durham police have issued an appeal for information on the fire, which razed the abandoned structure near the intersection of Hwy. 12 and Albert Street. The fire was discovered by Durham officers patrolling the area at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

A police dog picked up and followed a human trail but no suspects were apprehended. No one was injured, police said. A damage estimate wasn't released.

The former pig barn, out of use since the 1960s, was sometimes used by young people as a place to play paintball, police said.

Call police at 905-579-1520, extension 2674.
