Incinerator should have been voted down

Jul 02, 2009 - 01:46 PM

To the editor:

Friday, June 26, 2009, was a black day for the residents of Clarington.

All three Clarington Regional councillors voted in favour of an incinerator in Clarington. There has been an outpouring of concern by many, which seems to have been disregarded.

If our representatives respected the wishes of the people, the vote would have been defeated 15-13. What we need most are politicians working in the public interest, not primarily for themselves.

Why does Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region Medical Officer of Health consider the incinerator safe, stating there are no unacceptable risks? But the risks are acceptable based on the norms? Surely one risk is too many!

It is ironic when 75 other members of his profession have indicated their deep concern and opposition to erecting this potential health hazard in our community.

York Region council obviously listened to their residents and voted against an incinerator in their area. To the many people who have voiced their objection against the incinerator: continue the fight until common sense prevails!
