AJAX -- On Saturday, April 18 and Sunday April 19, Annandale hosted the annual Men's Last Chance Bonspiel.
It was the last curling event for the Annandale season, and the skaters had use of the ice after the final curling games. The event was full with 32 teams, and 16 of them won their way to qualify for a return to Sunday.
Winning the event and collecting $600 was the Jim Thedorf team from Oshawa Curling Club over the Barry Moylan home team after a close game that Moylan led for most of the way. Michael Bryson won the second event and $300 over Warren Leslie. The third event and $250 was captured by the David Brunelle team from Penetanguishine over Gerry Pinkney, and Blair Metrakos took fourth, collecting $200 competing against the Arnold Retz team.
The Men's Competitive League finished on April 14 with final games for each league. Winners in the playoff games for the six leagues A to F received cash prizes. Winning the club championship in the A division was the team of Blair Metrakos, Andrew Klein, Brad Cowan and Scott March. The win was tight over the team of Warren Leslie, Alex Bianchi, Tim March and Ray Zani.
From April 14 to 19, the curling event for Team Glenn Howard was the Grey Power Players' Championship in Alberta. Team Howard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and the front end of Brent Laing and Craig Savill, were the defending champions, but unable to repeat. However, they won the $50,000 bonus for top team in the Capital One event standings and also took home $16,000 for runner-up position. Randy Ferbey, of Edmonton, Alta., secured the fourth and final direct berth into the 2009 Canadian Trials after defeating Howard 10-7 in the final of the Grey Power Players' Championship,
