WHITBY -- A Hells Angel on trial for conspiring to murder a rival biker sparred with a prosecutor Friday, insisting he played no role in the alleged plot.
Remond Akleh bristled when Crown counsel John Scott suggested he was working in concert with Steven Gault, a biker Mr. Akleh has testified he disliked and feared. Mr. Scott hinted Mr. Akleh has exaggerated tensions among himself, Mr. Gault and the Oshawa Angels in the years after Mr. Akleh accused Mr. Gault of being a police informant.
Mr. Akleh has testified he feared for his life and moved from Durham Region to protect his family.
"You can suggest whatever you want, sir," Mr. Akleh said during an exchange in Superior Court with Mr. Scott.
"You don't know what I went through."
Mr. Scott began a vigorous cross examination of Mr. Akleh, a member of the Angels' Nomads wing with an assault on evidence the man has tendered in his own defence. During five days on the stand this week Mr. Akleh has given sometimes emotional testimony about the fear and anxiety he felt in dealing with Mr. Gault and the Oshawa chapter of the Hells Angels.
Mr. Gault, a police agent who infiltrated the Oshawa chapter, testified earlier at this trial he was enlisted in June 2006 by Mr. Akleh and Mark Stephenson, president of the Oshawa Angels, to kill Frank Lenti, a Woodbridge biker with ties to the rival Bandidos gang. The alleged plot was never acted upon; Mr. Akleh and Mr. Stephenson have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and counselling to commit murder.
Among the evidence jurors have heard is a secretly-taped conversation between Mr. Gault and Mr. Akleh at Mr. Akleh's Cobourg-area home in September 2006. Mr. Akleh testified he was frightened by the unexpected arrival of Mr. Gault -- he said Mr. Gault had threatened to kill him years earlier, when Mr. Akleh told other bikers Mr. Gault was a police informant -- and that he went along with the conversation to stall for time and get rid of Mr. Gault.
Friday morning Mr. Scott said the tape showed Mr. Akleh was plotting with Mr. Gault to kill Mr. Lenti.
"You weren't upset to see Gault at all," Mr. Scott charged.
"You're clearly involved in an agreement to kill Frank Lenti."
"No sir," Mr. Akleh replied, "I was never in agreement.
"I never (said) anything about Frank Lenti or killing him."
The trial, before Justice Bruce Glass, continues.
